For a while, I found myself responding to tweets and posts with one of two words: Bollocks or Brilliant. It got me thinking… could these two words alone capture the essence of everything I came across? Intrigued, I toyed with the idea of a website that used just those two ratings. But as I thought more about it, I realised that reducing everything to “best or worst” might be a bit, well, limiting. So, I did a little research.
I decided that, instead of only two categories, I’d need a few more to capture the full spectrum of quality—and preferably words beginning with B for consistency. Initially, I landed on three: Bollocks, Balanced, and Brilliant. But something still felt off. I wanted more nuance, something that conveyed good-but-not-great, and a middle ground that wasn’t just balanced but a bit edgy. That’s when Banging came to mind, slotting nicely between Balanced and Brilliant.
And then, I had an epiphany: Bollocks and Banging were slang, but Balanced and Brilliant felt too formal. I decided to fully embrace the cheekiness and find slang or less common words to fill each category.
Finally, after a bit of back-and-forth, I landed on the five categories I now have: Bollocks, Bleh, Basic, Banging, and Blinding. Bleh was actually the trickiest – it almost became Bog Standard, but I wanted something snappier. Eventually, I stumbled across Bleh, a word that perfectly captures that “meh” feeling: below average, underwhelming, but not total rubbish. It’s informal, it’s cheeky, and it was exactly what I was looking for.
With the five categories in place, all I needed was a name for the site. Since they all started with B, I began brainstorming around that. I toyed with names like 5Bs, Bomoter, and Buzzometer, but they seemed wrong. And then it hit me – why not name it after the most uniquely meh of my categories? I checked, and lucky me, Bleh.uk was available.
And there you have it. Bleh became the perfect name because this site, like its namesake, is informal, a bit cheeky, and intended to cut through the noise without taking itself too seriously.
So, enjoy… or not!
Now that I have bored you, why not finish off by reading the home page of Bleh? After all, you might miss something important—believe that, and you will believe anything.
