I Can’t Believe They Use the Word Butter!
Let’s get straight to it. ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!’ is a remarkably confident name for a spread. If you’re going to invite comparisons with butter, you’d better be prepared for them.
Butter is creamy, rich and actually enjoyable. This stuff? It tastes like someone mistook grease for flavour.
Marketed as a butter alternative, it’s not particularly convincing. The taste is… well, greasy. Not buttery. Not even close. It leaves an unpleasant coating on your tongue, and one smear on toast is quite enough to remind you what you’re missing.
The branding doesn’t help. The name suggests something so similar to butter that you might struggle to tell the difference. I didn’t struggle. Not for a second.
The packaging makes it perfectly clear that it isn’t butter. The problem is the suggestion that it’s somehow close enough to fool you.
It isn’t.
And I’ve nothing against butter alternatives. There are plenty of reasons to choose a spread instead. But surely the minimum requirement is that it tastes pleasant? You shouldn’t have to convince yourself something is worth eating just because it’s trying too hard to resemble something better.
If you enjoy it, fair enough. I don’t.
I’d rather have a little actual butter on my toast than a generous helping of something that merely reminds me what butter tastes like.
No number of exclamation marks on the packaging will change that.
